SUNDAY NIGHT SELECTIONS FROM RIDEAU CARLETON- BRONCOBUSTER
Tough to beat a 3/3 night from Thursday, but, lets see if these picks can boost the ROI and end the month with on the upside.
Best Bet- Race 3 #1 Quick and Royal, M/L 2-1. Made a premature move last out and just got caught late. the move tipped his hand at what he can do against these. A rail draw tonight bodes well for this guy and should make a trip to the winners circle.
Next Best- Race 8 #6 Peenie, M/L 2-1. Toughest horses on the grounds meet in the preferred and this guy served notice in his last out with closing burst and back half in :56.1. His previous miles at the Meadowlands and Woodbine displayed a string of miles in 1:51 which is enough speed to beat these. His “A” game gets him to the winners circle again.
Value Bet- Race 1 #4 Havana Dream, M/L 8-1. WIN PLACE SHOW. Made a nice 3 wide move last out which got him a good piece. The start 2 back was telling because he managed to finish second against open claimers. That is significant because the one that beat him that night has already come back to win another and he drops out of open claimers and into a restricted class tonight. Should appreciate this classification and the odds should provide a nice across the board wager.

BEST BET—GULFSTREAM PARK–RACE 7–# 3 COZY LION.
Ran last year in a key race at Gulfstream in Feb. Came out of that race to run 2nd his next out and win right after that last spring in NY. Comes off the shelf today for Barclay Tagg and gets the red hot Castallano to ride. Ran well over the GP turf in tha tkey race last year, look for him in the picture today.
NEXT BEST—GULFSTREAM PARK–RACE 10–# 5 PENTECOST.
Mike Matz is having a real nice meet and his ride will continue here with PENTECOST today. Won on 1st asking at Aqueduct in November, he closed into a dawdling pace to get up in time going a mile. The distance increases and the track bias plays into his hands, this horse will only be better this time out, and again, Castallano is up and he rode him to his maiden win in NY…get up on this winner today.
VALUE BET—SANTA ANITA—RACE 8-# 12 GILDED GEM.
I have been waiting for this gal to show up in a race again. She has been scratched 2 times and where does she show up-IN A GRADE I-!!!. Look like I was right when I thought she is a horse full of talent. She goes in the Grade I Santa Monica today. Loves the plastic, as many Smarty Jones runners do. Gets the outer post today to sit and ponce with her patented late move…a big score at a big price looms here.
Bonjour Horseplayers! Sunday Action at Gulfstream…
Best Bet: Gulfstream Race 2 WIN #1A Brave Victory (2/1 ML). This optional claiming allowance will be run at seven furlongs and features a field of several Florida and Kentucky-bred horses. I think this Zeto trainee will cruise home with Julien Leparoux aboard without too much trouble.
Next Best: Gulfstream Race 4 WIN #8 Protesting (2/1 ML). Next up is a Mile-long allowance race for 3YO fillies and I like Protesting, who will be breaking on the outside. I’m once again going with Leparoux in this one and I think he can get the job done in here, although the ML favorite #4 Mambo Fever (9/5 ML) looks like a solid challenger.
Value Bet: Gulfstream Race 6 EXACTA BOX #3 Drosselmeyer (5/2 ML) with #4 Pulsion (3/1 ML). I expect Kent Desormeaux to ride Drosselmeyer all the way to the winner’s circle in this Mile and 1/8th allowance race and let’s hope Pulsion can follow right behind. Box this play for some added security and let’s try to make some cash!
Bonne Chance! Monsieur Chanceux
With the temps down in single digits this weekend, it looks like speed is king at the Meadowlands. Give extra credit to any horse doing well from off the pace, like Pilgrim Toner in Race 5. The 6 yo gelding was hopelessly last turning for home and fought the bias nicely to heat for 4th. Put him in your stable alert for next weekend.
Cold again tomorrow, but the racing is earlier in the day. Gotta believe the track will play similarly.
Let’s make some big money on this, the last day of the fiscal year, corporately speaking.

Well, Best Bet disappointed yesterday and Next Best scratched, but Value Bet did finish third at 17/1. Since the weather is still dicey, let’s stick with nice, warm Florida today and see if we can improve our score at Gulfstream with these picks.
Your BEST BET is 6 SHE BE WILD in RACE 9 (3/1 ML). There won’t be much of a price on her, but I just love this Eclipse Award winning filly. Amazing 4 wins and 1 place in 5 starts. This is her first race since the Breeders and her first race on a dirt track, but she’s been tearing up the Gulfstream course in recent works.
Your NEXT BEST BET is 3 FANCY FOOTSTEPS in RACE 5 (6/1 ML). Mare has a lot of early speed and should benefit from the turn back to a sprint today. Has won on the Gulfstream grass before and gets sharp Castellano in the irons.
Your VALUE BET is WIN/PLACE on 5 OMEGA GIRL in RACE 8 (12/1 ML). Won her debut easily gate to wire by over 10 lengths. Facing tougher today, but she looks to be up to the challenge. Expecting improvement in her second start and she might be hard to catch. Sharp works for a high percentage trainer.
Two winners last night for team Jersey Joe! Not enough to flush the visiting extended family into a hotel but the winners proved good enough for a complementary sirloin for yours truly. All in all a great night… Made some money and got to show some 1st timers around my home track. Can’t beat it.
Standing room only today at Casa De Mile Pro, but plenty of room for more winners. Join me Saturday night.

Best Bet:Race 10 #8 SOLDIER’S DANCER (8-5) will look to repeat in this and appears to be all the class.
Next Best: Race 8 #6 THIS ONES FOR PHIL (8-5) could get a dream trip in here just off the pace.
Value Play: Race 7 #6 LOXY LADY (8-1) has won two in a row and might get overlooked against these.

Been having some luck at Oaklawn lately – Thursday’s Best Bet and Next Best both won. But that big winter storm is still raging, so we should probably head to Florida to warm up a little. Plus it’s Sunshine Million day at Gulfstream, so there are some very nice horses on today’s card and some very good chances at juicy prices. I found some bargains for us in these picks.
Your BEST BET is 4 BAD ACTION in RACE 10 (10/1 ML). Versatile gelding can handle turf or dirt and was a winning machine in 2009 – 7 wins in 17 starts. Been keeping G3 company lately and is in great form. Been working well on the turf. New trainer Pletcher and Velasquez are a dangerous duo.
Your NEXT BEST BET is 3 PATTI’S REGAL SONG in RACE 7 (10/1 ML). Filly has finished in the money in all three starts at 3 different tracks. Goes for a 4th today in her turf debut and if she likes the lawn, look out! Pilot Cruz adds to her appeal.
Your VALUE BET is WIN/PLACE on 6 EVEN ROAD in RACE 9 (20/1 ML). Mare fits just fine with these and her late running style may serve her well with all the speed in this race. Look for her late.
Bonjour! Saturday Plays at Gulfstream…
Best Bet: Gulfstream Race 2 WIN #4 General Maximus (8/5 ML). The second race at Gulfstream features a field of 3YO colts and geldings and some of these horses could end up in the Derby. I think there are two horses to watch out for in here – General Maximus and #2 Afleet Express (3/1 ML). General Maximus earned a solid 93 Beyer last time out and I expect him to come out on top.
Next Best: Gulfstream Race 8 WIN #6 This Ones For Phil (9/5 ML). The $200,000 Sunshine Millions Sprint Stakes will be run at six furlongs and looks like it’ll be a fun one to watch. This One’s For Phil will be challenged by #4 Pashito the Che (8/5 ML), but I think Velasquez will take This Ones For Phil to the winner’s circle.
Value Bet: Gulfstream Race 9 EXACTA BOX #4 Sweet Repent (2/1 ML) with #7 Jessica Is Back (9/5 ML). The $300,000 Sunshine Millions Distaff Stakes will be run at a Mile and 1/8th and looks like a battle between these two horses. I don’t care which one comes out on top, but hopefully they can run 1-2. Enjoy Sunshine Millions day and check back tomorrow for more from the team!
Bonne Chance! Monsieur Chanceux
SUNSHINE MILLIONS AND MAGNA 5 RETURN- BRONCOBUSTER
The first month of 2010 closes out with a bang. California and Florida breds do battle at both tracks in another edition of the Sunshine Million and the Magna 5 returns with a pair of races from Santa Anita and Gulfstream Park with a race thrown in from Laurel. The return of these events give us exciting opportunity to see some good older runners perform, before the 3 yr. olds start to take center stage in the many prep’s that will eventually lead to the 2010 Kentucky Derby.
As the month closes out, stick with me, as it has been a decent month and start to the new year. The month has provided a 30% strike rate over 56 selections and a positive ROI to boot! That also includes a 3/3 night at Rideau Carleton on Thursday! Hopefully, you were on board…
Let’s see if these selections can make it home and make a dent into 3 legs of the 5 races that will make up todays Magna-5. With the return of that pool, one would expect a juicy pool will be up for grabs!
SANTA ANITA-
Best Bet- Race 6 #10 Dubai Majesty, M/L 4-1.WIN WAGER. Comes into this race fresh off a decent series of works and I have the feeling this mare is sitting on a good race. She was a runner-up in this event last year which serves as a good experience for her. In a rematch she will face the one that beat her last year but, i like the fact that since that defeat this mare has raced 8 times, winning 3 of those and off a freshening, her form won’t be over the top. In contrast the winner of his event last year, High Resolve has only raced 3 times the past year, expects to be overbet, and comes into this race with a beyer 21 points LOWER than she did when she headed into last years event. I’ll take the better price on what i feel is a better mare coming in!
SANTA ANITA-
Next Best- Race 7 #1 Closeout, M/L 4-1.WIN WAGER. Lot’s of speed up front will set it up for a stalking type and this one should be in a prime spot to take advantage of the early speed expected by the likes of Century Park and Bootleg Annie. Draws a cozy spot and attracts one the leading turf riders in the U.S in Lezcano! Will need to bump up the beyers slightly and a top effort will put her in winning mode against these.
GULFSTREAM-
Value Bet- Race 10 #4 Bad Action, M/L 10-1. WIN PLACE SHOW. An interesting addition to the platoon and the hot Pletcher barn. It is noted that this guy was purchased privately after his last start in november and a top percentage trainer should have him ready for a top effort. He doesn’t appear to be out of his element in here and even out of Pletcher’s barn, this guy managed 7 wins in 2009 campaign where he was also 13 out of 17 in the frame and banked nearly 300K! That consistency to hit the frame makes this one a nice WPS option, with a chance to haul in the lions share!
