Oaks Day, a great day of racingat Churchill Downs and thats where I am focusing today and tomorrow. 2 easy ones today folks Blind Luck in The Oaks and Rachel in the La Troienne.

BEST BET—CHURCHILL DOWNS–RACE 10–#1 SETSUKO.
This colt would ave been running for the roses tomorrow if he had enough graded earnings. Only 1 turf race under the belt, but his plastic track form is very good. That will transfer to the grass very well. Bejerano stays aboard and e should be flying in the stretch. Will save ground from the rail and that can make all the difference.

NEXT BEST—CHURCHILL DOWNS—RACE 3—# 8 SOLDERO.
Has tried the turf 4 times thus far with no luck. Gets a major jock change today from Thierot to Solis. Threw in a clunker lst time out over the plasitic at Keeneland, expect major improvement today going back to the weeds. Price will be right for a major score.

VALUE BET—CHURCILL DOWNS—RACE 6—EXACTA COLD—# 4 RACHEL ALEXANDRA—# 2 MORENA.
Rachel will rebound in a big way today folks, if she is anyhere near even money, bet the ranch on her. But to get more value for our buck, make a cold exacta with Rachel on top and , the only closer in the race , 30-1 M.L Morena to pick up the retreating early runners after Rachel beats them into submission.

Bonjour! Oaks Day at Churchill Downs…

Oaks Day has finally arrived! Check out my Kentucky Oaks selection in the Next Best category. May the horse be with you!

Best Bet: Churchill Downs Race 6 WIN #3 Zardana (3/1 ML). The $400,000 La Troienne Stakes (G 2) will be run at a mile and 1/16th and features a short field of six fillies and mares trying to beat Rachel Alexandra. I think Zardana has what it takes to beat Rachel once again and I like her morning line odds. After watching her win the New Orleans Ladies Stakes I don’t think Rachel is a lock in this one, although the morning line puts her at 3/5. Let’s chase that value and go against the chalk!

Next Best: Churchill Downs Race 11 WIN #5 Blind Luck (6/5 ML). The $500,000 Kentucky Oaks (G 1) will be run at a mile and 1/8 and features a field of 14 fillies, many of which look like tossouts. Blind Luck is a Kentucky-bred Hollendorfer trainee who will be ridden by Rafael Bejarano and I’m looking for this filly at the wire. Blind Luck for the win!

Value Bet: Churchill Downs Race 10 WIN #5 Strike the Tiger (10/1 ML). The $175,000 American Turf Stakes (G 2) features eleven entries scheduled to run a mile and 1/16th on the Louisville Turf. Strike the Tiger at 10/1? Sign me up! This Wesley Ward trainee definitely has his work cut out in here, but it’s hard to pass up a horse like this at 10/1. Enjoy the great racing today and check back tomorrow for Team R2D’s Derby plays!

FRIDAY SELECTIONS FROM CHURCHILL DOWNS- BRONCOBUSTER

Last year’s Kentucky Oak was dominated by Rachel Alexandra.  Her dominance heading into that race chased away most of the competition. It was reduced to just a 7 horse field last year.  Blind Luck enters this years Kentucky Oaks with similar popularity, but, unlike last year, this years race has still attracted a full field of 14 fillies.  That alone will give this years event a much different complexion.  Another thing giving this race a much different complexion is based on the fact that one of the top fillies in this division, Devil May Care has defected to try the boys in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby. Even with the dominance shown by Blind Luck, she will still have to beat 13 others and do it while ensuring she doesn’t get into any trouble.  One of interesting long shots that may give Blind Luck a go breaks from the rail. It’s Tea Time makes her conventional dirt debut and may actually move forward on it. She is expected to like the surface based on the fact that she is a daughter of Dynaformer and that pedigree loves the dirt. He was the sire of 2006 derby winner, Barbaro. She expects to offer up double digits and may be an alternative to the favorite.  Blind Luck is expected to be way overbet and I’m leaning towards a possible upset or at least some gimmick plays to increase the return a bit. See my value bet to see what I like.

Best Bet- Race 9 #3 Macho Again, M/L 5-1.  When he brings his “A” game this one can be as tough as nails and anywhere near his morning line would be a very square price.  If he peaks in this spot, he will have too much class for these.  Love the draw which will give Albarado all sorts of options and the distance of 8.5F is right up his alley!  Expect a patient ride today and will do his best running when it counts the most!

Next Best- Race 10 #5 Strike the Tiger, M/L 10-1.  Interesting entant in Setsuko, who was on the Kentucky Derby trail. He is a deep closer who could be dangerous in a spot such as this, but, I’m not certain how he’ll respond to the trek east and the transfer to the lawn. A very nice alternative at a price could lie in Strike the Tiger.  He is the speed of the speed in this race and if Velasquez can harness that speed, he could go all the way on the chooch.  All aboard at an honest price!

Value Bet-  Race 11 KENTUCKY OAKS, EXA BOX 1-5-13.  #1 It’s Tea Time, M/L 15-1.  Longshot potential as this daughter of Dynaformer makes her conventional dirt debut.  She should love the transfer to the dirt and has a very productive post for the distance.  If she moves forward on the surface switch she could get in the mix at a juicy price!  #5 Blind Luck, M/L 6-5. Becomes a prohibitive favorite with the defection of Devil May Care.  Some will argue this one could’ve tried the boys also.  Her price in here will be very short and she can only beat herself, but, remember there is a full field of 14 and that always has to be considered in a race such as this.  I expect her to be way over bet and turning to a gimmick to help boost the price.  #13 Amen Hallelujah, M/L 8-1.  Considered a few options as my 3rd choice in this EXA box and will give the nod to #13 simply because i love the combination of Leparoux/Dutrow.  Must overcome a difficult draw and should also offer up a square price. EXA BOX 1-5-13 and hope for the biggest return, which could happen if Blind Luck slips up.

All eyes are on Churchill Downs today as the ladies take the stage for the Kentucky Oaks. They should be soaking up the last of the sun before the predicted deluge on Saturday. But hold on to your hats…really, hold on to your hats cause it’s going to be a windy one. Great field of fillies, but I’m sad that She Be Wild was injured and had to sit this one out. Blind Luck is the heavy and deserving favorite, but it’s not a done deal for this talented girl and I just can’t abide a 6/5 morning line. Gotta try to beat her and there’s a few in here that have a good shot. Tidal Pool is in great form – Beyers in the 100’s for her last two races plus she gets hot jock Borel. Amen Hallelujah is another to watch – finished 2nd in her last to Derby contender Devil May Care and has strung together an impressive string of bullet works. I’m going with another filly who recently edged out the fave. Check my value bet below along with a couple of other choice picks. I just love these big fields of top notch runners – lots of bargains to be found. Speaking of big fields, be sure to check back tomorrow for Team R2D’s Derby thoughts. Good Luck!

Your BEST BET is 6 DOUBLES PARTNER in RACE 10, The American Turf (10/1 ML). Rock Hard Ten boy should love the return to the turf after a dismal performance in the Lanes End. He won both grass starts and trainer is 20% in switches from synthetic to turf. Not to mention that Pletcher is having an all around terrific year. Love the rider change to Go Go.

Your NEXT BEST BET is 1 MORALIST in RACE 8, The Churchill Downs Turf Sprint (15/1 ML). This is a tough field, but I drooled a little when I saw the 15/1 morning line on this guy. One of my favorite Hawthorne buddies and a fast one at that. Shook things up in the Shakertown, setting a smoking pace and ended up 3rd. Reunited with Meier today and these two know how to win races together. Love the rail draw for this speedster, who is also capable of firing from off the pace. Which he may need to do with this field.

Your VALUE BET is WIN/PLACE on 7 CRISP in RACE 11, The Kentucky Oaks (8/1 ML). Blind Luck is the one to beat in this one, and Crisp just happened to do it in her last. Now granted Blind Luck had a bad trip and I’m not sure that the synthetic is her thing, but a win is still a win. This will be this lightly raced girl’s first start on the dirt, so that is a question mark, but based on her recent bullet in the slop, I think she’ll like it. There’s a ton of early speed in this race and that should suit her stalk and pounce style. Used this lady once before as my value bet and it paid off. She might just do it again.

Friday is a spectacular days racing in this build up to the 2010 Kentucky Derby. Although the most important person making the predictions in the next few days will be the Weather Person. Today should be fine but Saturday lots of Thunder showers enough to effect the track?  we will just have to wait and see……….Check those tomlinson figures folks or let the R2D team do that for you……

Churrchill Downs

BEST BET ….. RACE 10 …..# 6 DOUBLES PARTNER.
 Grade 2 American Turf for 3yo’s over 1 1/16th.
Definatly the best betting race on the card. The selection was on my short list for the Derby earlier in the year. Certainly has the best breeding in the race Rock Hard Ten is an excellent Turf producer. Had  a troublesome run in the Lanes End on the poly. nothing has gone right for him in 4 of his six starts. Today he should be a lot happier back on the lawn at a distance and off come the shades on goes Gomez. The danger will come from LOST APTIDUDE who will be the speed but doesnt have Eskendereya and Jackson Bend to deal with today. STRIKE THE TIGER is an interesting horse first American trained winner at Royal Ascot won in the slop at Churchill but surely more at home at sprint distances.

NEXT BEST ….. RACE 8 …..# 4 HEAVENLY CHORUS.
5F CHURCHILL DOWNS TURF SPRING GRADE 3.
Again lots of angles turf, distance,  track conditions. Thing that catches my eye is the connections and the price 20/1 m.l. for an Asmussen runner in any race is tempting enough for anyone.Never been out of the frame in the last five races various distances,  different tracks and different track conditions. These type of improving horses even at the age of 5 are very difficult to place. No respect given by the oddsmaker his loss our gain.
SILVER TIMBER will probaly go off the favourite and deservedly so.  Leparoux has rode him in his two Grade 3 wins last one at Keeneland two weeks ago. Chad Brown has his string in fine form the former Standardbred trainer just keeps on improving every year.
BARGE Pletchers second string looks an interesting runner let go by the barn then brought back did a blistering turf work a week ago,  one for the exotics.

VALUE BET ….. RACE 11 …..# 13 AMEN HALLELUJAH.
1 1/8th Kentucky Oaks 3yo fillies Grade 1.
An arguement for BLIND LUCK to run in the Derby has cropped up ….I dont think so she is at home in this field and will be a deserved favourite.
TIDAL POOL catches the eye with Borel riding for Lucas has to find 2 1/2 lengths  with an extra 4 pound in weight against Blind luck tough but could fill the minor placings with a Borel ride.
The Selection AMEN HALLELUJAH  with top jock Leparoux aboard  has been placed or won in all but one start. Her last outing was an eye catching second to Derby entered filly Devil May Care,  went to sleep a little when she hit the front. Difficult ride thats for sure but if Leparoux can settle her early on and produce her at the right moment everything will be fine.

Bonjour! Thursday at Churchill Downs…

Best Bet: Churchill Downs Race 1 WIN #6 Luv Gov (2/1 ML). Today’s opener is a mile and 1/16th claimer with six entries. Luv Gov is a 4YO Kentucky-bred trained by D. Wayne Lucas who should have what it takes to win this one. I’ve also got my eyes on #2 Chief Eric (4/1 ML), who could offer some value in an exacta.

Next Best: Churchill Downs Race 3 WIN #3 Jungle Tale (2/1 ML). This mile-long allowance will be run on the Turf and Jungle Tale looks like the one to beat. This 3YO Florida-bred filly will be ridden by Julien Leparoux and is trained by Steve Asmussen – watch out for her at the wire.

Value Bet: Churchill Downs Race 10 WIN #3 Include the Cat (10/1 ML). The last race on the card is a maiden claimer that will be run at five and ½ furlongs and don’t forget to include the cat. This 3YO Kentucky-bred filly will be ridden by Julien Leparoux and could pull off an upset today. Be sure to check back tomorrow for Oaks analysis and Saturday for the Derby!
