Best Bet: Colonial Downs Race 3 WIN #7 Lookin’ Foxy (6/5 ML). This optional claimer will be run at a mile and 3/16th on the outer turf and Lookin’ Foxy, a 4YO Kentucky-bred filly, also looks like a winner. She shouldn’t have much trouble winning this one, but consider passing if her odds drop at post time.

Next Best: Colonial Downs Race 6 WIN #7 Sir Togo (9/5 ML). Eight horses are entered in this five and ½ furlong claimer that will be run on the outer turf and Sir Togo looks better than the rest. Keep an eye on the horse starting to his inside, #6 Ride the Westwind (7/2 ML) but look for Togo at the wire.

Value Bet: Colonial Downs Race 8 WIN #3 Indian Sky (6/1 ML). Here’s another five and ½ furlong claimer on the outer turf, this race could offer some value. Indian Sky is a 3YO Florida-bred filly who will carry the lowest weight in this field at 112 pounds. Good luck and check back soon for more tips from the team!

Best Bet: Arlington Race 3 WIN #3 Pretty in Mink (8/5 ML). This claimer will be run at a mile on the main track and features a field of fillies and mares 3YO+. Pretty in Mink looks like the girl to beat and should look pretty in the winner’s circle as well. Consider passing on this play if her odds drop lower at post time.

Next Best: Arlington Race 1 WIN #4 Council Oak (2/1 ML). Today’s opener is a five furlong maiden claimer that will be run on the turf. A field of 3YO and 4YO colts and geldings are fighting for the prize and Council Oak should get the job done. He’ll face some competition and I’d keep an eye on #2 Therion (7/2 ML), but look for Council Oak at the wire.

Value Bet: Arlington Race 6 WIN #3 Crepe Myrtle (6/1 ML). This five furlong maiden special weight looks like a very open contest, with over a dozen 2YO fillies appearing on the morning line. All these juvies will carry 118 pounds and I expect to see some value on the tote board afterwards. I think Michael Baze will ride Crepe Myrtle to graduation! Good luck and may the horse be with you!

Are all the stars in alignment? Roger Attfield hopes so as he sends out 3 quality horses to compete in 3 stake events today at Woodbine and in front her majesty Queen Elizabeth II., no less!  Her first time in attendance since 1997 and be best assured Roger will have his horses ready to roll.  His longest shot of the 3 will probably be Not Bourbon in the Highlander Stakes, followed by Spice Route in the Singspiel, and lastly will send out Mobilizer in the Queen’s plate.  That one is listed as the second choice at 7-2 behind the well regarded Hotep, who has competed in the U.S this year, while on the Kentucky Derby trail.  Although he didn’t manage to make a dent or even start in the Kentucky Derby, he comes into this race fresh and merits some respect.  As usual a pre race inspection for a race such as this is a must to see what horses look the part and are acting the part.  With the Queen on hand, the track will be packed with thousands of fans and it will be interesting to see what horses actually handle it!  If you are betting via simulcast, listening closely and view as much as you can from the paddock and the post parade leading up to the race.

WOODBINE-

Best Bet- Race 8 SINGSPIEL STAKES, #6 Spice Route, M/L 9-5.  Graded III stake here in the Singspiel and this one just looks too good for these.  He loves the turf and Mike Smith has come all this way for the ride.  That’s enough for me!  He should give this guy a good stalking trip and should be gobbling them up in the long E.P. Taylor turf course.  With any luck it will Roger’s second win of the day.

Next Best- Race 10 QUEEN’S PLATE, #9 Mobilizer, M/L 7-2.  Roger Attfield has won the Queen’s Plate 8 times in his illustrious career. His first Queen’s plate win was way back in 1976. His last Queen’s plate win was in 2008 with Not Bourbon who competes today in the Highlander. Mobilizer gives him a decent shot at number 9!!  Even though he has Mike Smith aboard in an earlier race with Spice Route, he gives a boost of confidence in local Jockey Jono Jones.  A trip to the winner’s circle to greet the Queen with his tux, tails, and infamous top hat will truly make this a day to remember!  As for the horse, Mobilizer finished 2nd in the plate trial and has sicne worked in fine fashion, 6F 1:13B. Most successful horses in past Queen’s plate have taken the route that this has taken and used the trial as a springboard. He will need to handle the environment and handle Hotep and take care of business!  If that happens, destiny awaits..

Value Bet-  Race 6 HIGHLANDER STAKES, #7 Not Bourbon, M/L 6-1. WIN PLACE SHOW.  If Roger Attfield is to have a 3/3 day, it starts here with an outsider in Not Bourbon.  This 5 yr. old won the Queen’s plate 2 yrs ago and competes today on the weeds in the Highlander. Jono Jones who rode this guy to victory in the plate in 2008, will guide him again today and will also ride for Attfield in today’s Plate.  He will break from the outer post and hopes to get a following trip.  Anywhere near his morning line would good enough for a nice WPS try.

Plenty of fireworks on both sides of the border this afternoon. GR 1,2,3 stakes races on offer at Woodbine worth a combined total of $1.35 million,  will prove to be a fascinating afternoons sport in front of Her Majesty visiting the Colonies to participate in her favourite pastime.

Some 234 years earlier just south of Woodbine her Great Great Great Great Great Grand father was getting the Royal boot by Mr Washington and his tea party followers.

The sport of Kings has come a long way but the same questions still remain who is going to win?

The Whisperer is still finding winners galore lets carry on the good habit.

WOODBINE.

BEST BET …..RACE 10 ….. # 9 MOBILIZER.

The Queens Plate 1 1/4 mile 3 yo’s purse 1,000,000 on the poly.

Lots of value in this race some royaly bred colts and fillies with the most number of runners in a decade.

The selection # 9 MOBILISER  went into my notebook at the Keeneland spring meet where he finished second on his racecourse debut. Attfield the conditioner is going for his ninth plate and knows how to prep a horse. A son of Motivator who won the Epsom Derby in 2005 he has an identical running style of his father. Winds up gradually with a high cruising speed hitting top gear at the bussiness end. Motivator actually stands at the Queens stud in Sandringham and has been producing middle distance winners since going to stud. A longshot is # 6 SMART SKY trained by a Irishman who covered recently in this blog an Irishman who has a canny eye for a big race winner.

NEXT BEST ….. RACE 8 ….. # 6 SPICE ROUTE.

The Singspiel Gr 3, 1 1/2 miles 3yo’s and up on the Poly

$150,000 purse on the turf.

# 6  SPICE ROUTE  Will go off the home town favourite and rightly so UK bred son of Kings Best a smart performer on his day. Has won on this distance and surface first time out this year but in the capable hands of Mike Smith making the long journey East. # 7 FORGOTTEN DYNASTY comes north will be at home on this beautifull turf course and has top jock Javier Castellano onboard if covered up in the early stages has a turn of foot to unleash.

VALUE BET ….. RACE 6 …… # 1 JUNGLE WAVE

# 2 FIELD COMMISSION

#  6 SIGNATURE RED

The Highlander Gr 2. 6 furlongs on the turf 3 yo’s and up purse $200,000.

A  BOXED EXACTA is the wager here in this dash over the Turf.

Churchill

Best Bet: Race 4 #9 CAPTAIN ON DECK (5-2) ran well here in his last dirt start and looks to be the one to beat for Kenneally.

Next Best: Race 5 #2 GO FOR JAN (9-2) gives Kenneally his second straight with Nakatani on board.

Value Play: Race 7 #12 THE FREAK (12-1) must be good with that name, and Albarado is up for Stewart.

If you followed the Whisperer yesterday and got on the VALUE bandwagon,  dollars were forth coming.

No substitute for class as they say. First time out this season,  Hold me back scorched in at great odds as predicted in this column.

Today should be no different, watching a track on a daily basis things of note become apparent. The latest noteworthy piece of info is the small stable of Mike Doyle firing on all cylinders. Last two days he has come up with a stable 1-2 in two races. Mike knows a thing or to about horses.  this native of Ireland was persuaded to work for the mighty Stronach operation in a advisory position pinpointing yearlings that will succeed. His greatest success was advising the purchase of a not so good looking yearling, which went on to win the BREEDERS CUP Ghostzapper was his name.

He has a runner today which catches my eye and is worthy of the value bet.

WOODBINE

BEST BEST ….. RACE 4 ……. # 6 FIRST RATE.

NEXT BEST ….. RACE 5 ……. # 8 DINO DINARO.

VALUE BET …. RACE 2 ……. # 5 KENTUCKY JONES. W/P/S.

Thursday  whats so special about Woodbine racetrack in Toronto Canada. Well its Canada day where the country celebrates its birthday with parades and sporting events. So what may seem just another day on the racing calander is in actual fact a big day couple of stakes races shippers in from New York and Kentucky, but the most important point to note is the crowd, which will be in excess of 20,000. So a good handle is assured WITH plenty of value for money plays on the whole card.

BEST BET ….. RACE 4 …..# 6 CAREM CRESCENT.
The Sweet Briar Too $100,000 for fillies and mares 7 Furlongs on the Poly.
# 1 TRIBAL BELLE will renew battle with the selection # 6 CAREM CRESCENT. Having won handily in the G3 Hendrie in May. That was Carem Crescent’s first race of the season and she will strip fitter for the effort,  expect to see her on the pace once she gets in front very hard to dislodge. A confident best bet.

NEXT BEST ….. RACE 10 ….. # 11 PISTOL PETE AFLEET
Clm 12,500 1 1/16th Poly 3yo’s and up.
Field is running for a purse of $22,600. Asmussen has seen fit to bring this horse up from Churchill to compete in his colours. Tough Tough horse in the frame nine out of last ten runs, went off FAV in six of those. He will be the chalk today but at a decent price. This is the value of a big field your getting a genuine price for a genuine animal. The purse money brings out the best animals from allover.

VALUE BET …..RACE 8 …..# 7 HOLD ME BACK
The Dominion Day Handicap G3 $200,000 1 1/4 on the Poly.
When giving the card the once over,  this horse stuck out like a sore thumb. Well not just the horse but the fact that Kent Desormeaux has come all the way to Canada for one mount for William Mott. Now the horse has an excellent resume won the Lanes End on the way to last years Derby first time out no less. He is trying to win a graded stakes race first time out today. Ran poorly in the Derby on a sloppy track. Giant Causeway colt out of an unbridled song mare will get every inch of the mile and a quarter, has an excellent chance to put his carear back on track and at a price. # 2 SOUTHDALE  won a G3 last time out but has never tackled this distance or opposition. The selection vied for my BEST BET title but the morning line says it all value value value.

LAST MINUTE INFORMATION.

When making a wager wether it be Standardbred/Thoroughbred/Greyhound racing or even playing the tables in a casino. Take in as much last minute information as you can.

Last nights North American Cup at Mohawk (standardbreds) was a classic example. Racing for 1.5 million dollars the trainer of the eventual winner was interviewed 5 mins before the race and couldnt divulge the information quick enough about her entry SPORTSWRITER.

“ He ran a tough elimination heat last week finishing third, but was not right. He was scoped and blood work done which was all out of sync.”   All this was put right in the past week.

To run a good race being off colour was all the info this wagerer needed room for improvement I say……. he duely obliged at nice odds. Last minute info is the name of the game.

The big night has arrived as Mohawk plays host to the $ 1.5 million dollar North America Cup.  This happens to be Canada’s richest harness race and has attracted some of the best 3 yr. old colt pacers on the planet!  Who says, there is no money to be made in this sport?  Mohawk will offer up a total of approximately 3.5 million in purses tonight. Besides the 1.5 million NAC, Mohawk also has the Final of the Fan Hanover, $ 666,000,  and the final of the Goodtimes trot, $ 387,000 to compliment their 3.5 million dollar card.   With this kind of money being offered up in one night, it proves that there is substantial money being offered in this industry to the breeder’s, owners, trainers, drivers, and grooms alike..  For the connections of the 10 horses in tonight’s NAC final, this race and this kind of purse money all started with a dream either at the breeding shed or the yearling sale. It’s a long haul to get it this far! I wish all the connections the best of luck and a safe journey.

MOHAWK-

Best Bet-  Race 11 #6 Keystone Horatio, M/L 4-1. Finds himself among a short field tonight with a few defections who are trying their luck in Des Smith at Rideau on Sunday.  One of those defections includes the much talked about star Big Time Ball.  Without him in here tonight, it should increase this guys chances significantly.  Randy Waples/ John Kopas combination adds to the appeal, as they have teamed up with many winners in the past.  Anywhere near this morning line will be juicy!

Next Best- Race 13 #5 Bolero Charles, M/L 3-1.  Is going to be ultra tough tonight now that’s he’s had 3 races under his belt.  One of the top drivers Mark MacDonald should have him forwardly placed and in a prime position to take advantage of this field.  If he brings his “A” game tonight, he will be too good for these, especially from this productive post.

Value Bet- Race 7  1.5 MILLION NA CUP, #8 One More Laugh, M/L 12-1.  WIN PLACE SHOW.  The big race comes up pretty wide open with at least 6 starters who appear to be legit contenders!  Anyone of them could win the race of their life, if things shake out in their favor. With that said, i’ve landed on a horse who i feel won’t take an abundance of the support.  If I’m honest with myself, i think this guy has a good a shot as any and may even have as much talent as any in this field.  With the expected odds, a WPS will not only spread the risk but, also give us an opportunity on a great return on investment.  Another angle to consider is that one of the North America’s leading drivers, Tim Tetrick has given this guy a boost of confidence by selecting him to drive even though Tetrick was on board Rock N Roll Heaven last week.  Even with that foe providing the fastest mile of the 3 divisions, Tetrick decided in favor of this guy.  That’s an angle i am all over, because in a recent interview with Tetrick himself, he was clear that he don’t give trainers preference for his services, but, rather selects the horse who he feels has the best shot of winning. It’s a game where drivers make a good living by working on commission and driving winners!  That interview got my attention, especially when i started asking myself why a driver would jump off the likely favorite in a 1.5 million dollar race!  Does Tetrick know something we don’t?  Is there an ace up his sleeve? To hear his interview that have gave on trot radio, click on the following link.
