Best Bet: Del Mar Race 5 WIN #4 Rathman. Tyler Baze will ride this 3YO Bluegrass-bred gelding in this six furlong maiden claimer and I expect to see these two in the winner’s circle.

Next Best: Del Mar Race 6 WIN #1 Very Vintage. This 3YO Cali-bred filly looks legitimate and Talamo should get the job done.

Value Bet: Del Mar Race 3 EXACTA BOX #6 Stacy’s Hope with #2 Conato. We could find some value in this race, but be sure to watch the exacta pool as the horses head to post. Check back tomorrow for more analysis from the team!

Bonne Chance! Monsieur Chanceux

Glorious Goodwood

July 27, 2010

Filed under: The Horsewhisperer, The Team Racing2Day pros — The Team Racing2Day pros @ 3:38 pm

Glorious Goodwood is upon us a beautifull course situated in Southern England with the Cathedral town of Chichester being the back drop.

This excellent 5 days of racing has lost a liitle of its staus in recent years. With the world becoming smaller and the purses becoming bigger elsewhere especially abroad,  it has lost its attraction for some of the bigger horses in training. Horses are trained for the Arlington Million rather than the Sussex Stakes.

It still presents plenty of opportunities for the player hopefully we can hightlight some of those wagering opportunities and explain the European style of racing along the way.

Goodwood is 100% turf course with a very undulating mile plus track and a straight mile course which also accomodates the big sprint fields. Not uncommon to see over 20 horses competing in these so gate draw is critical for a mile and under.

Connections to watch Mark Johnstone has an unprecedented record here and will sometimes run a horse on the first day and last day.

John and Ed Dunlop father and son but two different barns have a great record just training down the road near Arundel Castle.

Some of the group races attract the high end handicappers so exciting races will prevail with wannabe class horses coming out of the handicapping ranks into stakes races.

So follow all the action with R2D get that glass of compulsory Pimms # 1 and enjoy this feast of good priced winners.

BEST BET ….. RACE 2 …..#  4 CIRCUMVENT.

Gordon Stakes 1m1/2 turf 3yo only Gr3.

A race which acts as a trial for the third leg of the UK triple crown The St. Leger over a mile 6f.

You will find horses that have competed in the English Irish and sometimes French Derby in this race.

Conduit won this 2 years ago then went onto win a Breeders cup title in Santa Anita.

The selection Circumvent is a tough horse always thought of as a graded stakes horse but came up short 2 races ago in the Dante at York. The winner Cape Blanco ran a second to Harbinger at the weekend in a Gr 1 race. Harbinger won this race last year. So the form lines are there.  What I like is the run last time out at Newmarket the selection ran wire to wire carrying top wieght of  133 pounds giving wieght all around to his opponents and winning in gutsy fashion. Level wieghts today folks but a nice big price.

Artic Cosmos is trained by John Gosden well known in US circles having spent time at Santa Anita and winning Breeders titles at the same track. He will be battling it out at the end with the selection. Ran a fine race at Royal Ascot going down in the last few hundred yards in a Gr2 race over same distance.

NEXT BEST ….. RACE 4 ….. # 6 STONE OF FOLCA

Molecomb stakes 5f turf 2yo Gr 3.

John Best the selections conditioner has had this race earmarked for this guy since he was a yearling.

John is a shrewed trainer and often sends horses to compete in the US most recently Square Eddie to win the Keeneland Futurity 2  years ago. Could STONE OF FOLCA be another one following the same path.

He takes on favourite ZEBEDEE whom he beat at Royal Ascot last time out and who is part of the top juvenile operation in the world…. Richard Hannon and son.

Will be a classic race hope to see at least one of these guys in North America later in the year.

VALUE BET ….. RACE 7 …..# 1 MONTAFF. W/P/S

Handicap 1m6f turf 3yo plus Class 2.

Handicaps in Europe are roughly the equivelant to claiming races although the weight they carry is determined by a single person “The Handicapper” who in turn allocates weight by previous performances.

10.00 stones in imperial wieght 140 pounds is the maxium weight a horse can carry before progressing into stakes races. The jock may weigh only 121 pounds so the difference is made up in lead wieghts placed in a pouch in the saddle, so it pays to have a heavy jock in place instead of dead weight.

Mile six furlongs on undulating ground is a difficult distance the selection MONTAFF is dropping down from graded stakes level although top weight,  class and a shorter distance should help him prevail.

The trainer Mick Channon has the distinction of being the only English soccer player to score an International goal for England against the USA at Shay Stadium of all places in the seventies.

JEDI should bounce back representing the country’s top connections Sir Michael Stoute and jock Ryan Moore. He was a beaten favourite over a course that was not to his liking should turn things around to figure in the bussiness end of the race.

Cheers

BEST BET–DEL MAR–RACE 8–# 2 FORTUNIA.
Sounds familiar, well they scratched her yesterday to run troday in this Grade II going a mile. I like her for all the reasons I liked her yesterday and even more. Scratched to run in a Grade II, and a better distance for her today. Should get a nice run at the leaders as the go thru the far turn. Im loading up on her today.

NEXT BEST–DEL MAR–RACE 6 # –8 BRUCE’S DREAM.
Joe Talamo is riding the Delmar turf course like he owns it. Horse sports a perfect record except for loss to California Flag, last years BC Sprint champ. Not too shabby a report card folks. Comes into todays race with a nice work around the dogs on turf up at Hollywood. Lokks real good here today.

VALUE BET–MONMOUTH PARK–RACE 8–# 3 MINNAMANA.
Been running very well since his vacation. Sports a win and 4th in his last 2. Last a late turn of speed , which has been good at Monmouth all year. Luis Garcia comes up fro Maryland for the mount, his only mount of the day.

Cough! Cough! Might have a case of seconditis coming on – two more places again yesterday. But…and it’s a big but…Value Bet Lilly Fa Pootz (love that name) scored and paid $26.20 for the across the board bet! Not a bad day after all. Now we just need all winners, right? That’s not too much to ask for. So let’s stay at the lovely Del Mar and cheer these three runners to victory!

Your BEST BET is 1 ASPERITY in RACE 3 (7/2 ML). 6 YO has a ton of back class – a G3 winner in Europe. Couple of strong efforts off a very long layoff. Should be ready to fire in this third start from the break. Love the long works on the turf.

Your NEXT BEST BET is 3 CALLE VISTA in RACE 2 (4/1 ML). Lightly raced filly finished second in her last at this level and scored a career best Beyer. Runs well fresh and broke her maiden at this distance. Nice string of works going long.

Your VALUE BET is WIN/PLACE/SHOW on 2 SILVER STETSON MAN in RACE 7 (6/1 ML). Gelding has been off for a year, but Baffert knows how to get ‘em ready. And this guy looks ready to rock based on a sharp work tab. Garcia wins 32% for this barn.

BEST BET–ARLINGTON PARK–RACE 5–# 6 GENERAL CHARLEY.
Comes in off a 3 races win streak and the lack of early lick in here will enable him to make it 4. Chris Block bring the 8 year old gelding back at the 25k price tag and when these ol’ geldings get in good shape they stay there. Has a real nice work on July 17th to show us he’s still in form. Bet and watch he’ll wire this field again.

NEXT BEST–DEL MAR–RACE 6–# 6 FORTUNIA.
Cash Assmussen, “the other Assmussen”, brings this filly to the beach in tip top form. A different horse since going on the lawn and ran a real, nice  2nd to a very good one in WASTED TEARS  in her last. Has had traffic issues in 2 of her last 3 and still managed a win and a 2nd. Goes from Lone Star to Delmar, so we will indeed get a price and the snobs of LaJolla won’t respect her at the windows….take advantage of that.

VALUE BET–DEL MAR—RACE 8–# 1 CROWDED HOUSE.
Taking a flyer here, this colt comes from Newmarket and Ascot to the G1 Eddie Read.  Gets Lasix for the 1st time which may improve him quite a bit. Been running against some real good ones in Dubai and England. Gets Tyler Baze and gets a few pounds as well. May lite it up and double digit odds.

The positive ROI continued Friday night with 11-1 shot value pick given right here on R2D.  An across the board play netted a profit of over $ 10 and if you caught him a gimmick, the return was even higher, with the favorite off the board.

Saturday night provides lots of opportunity and what a great card!  2.1 Million dollars in purses tonight which include the Canadian Breeders Championships,  The Roses are Red final,  The Armbro Flight, and the highlight of the night, The Maple Leaf Trot which goes for over 700K!

Stick with me folks and lets see if the positive ROI continues!

MOHAWK-

Best Bet- Race 10 THE ROSES ARE RED FINAL, #4 Dreamfair Eternal, M/L 2-1. This is a very class mare who is sporting a 3 race winning streak and also looks poised to defend her title.  She won this race last year in come from behind fashion and has the goods to repeat tonight.

Next Best- Race 12 #2 Our Lucky Killean, M/L 6-1.  Risky play but, i’ll go out on a limb on this classy old warrior, as he rejoins forces in the Cassie Coleman stable.  That’s an angle I’m all over and it shouldn’t take long for this veteran to regain some winning form, especially at this modest level. Expect him to take quite a bit support on the homecoming of sorts!  Watch the tote board for the clues and make sure the price is in your comfort zone!

Value Bet- Race 9 THE ARMBRO FLIGHT FINAL. #3 Friendly Amigo, M/L 12-1. WIN PLACE SHOW.  All the support will go to the corner of Buck I St. Pat and for good reason.  The price will be very short on her and lets land on an alternative with some real value. Trevor Ritchie can be dangerous in these types of situations and his price will be very square.  If the expected favorite makes any miscues, this one could be dangerous at a price.  When you’re itchy, bet Ritchie!  Across the board to spread the risk and hope for the lions share!
