SATURDAY IS A DOUBLEHEADER DAY FOR BRONCOBUSTER.

It’s Saturday and lots of racing to choose from! Both the flats and harness a like..  The action kicks off in the afternoon with a traditional card from Chruchill Downs.  The day features many stake races, including a pair of grade III’s on the lawn with the Regret Stakes and the Jefferson Cup Stakes, followed by a beauty in the Grade I. Stephen Foster Handicap.   The day also includes a $ 200,000 event that will feature fan favorite Rachel Alexanadra. Her morning line is so low, we will by pass that race altogether.  Not that she’s unbeatable, but, the fact is on top of a very short price expected, the field comes up very short!  It will be hard to find the type of value that would be worth the risk.   I am hoping for some potential value plays that could land a nice positive ROI.   The ROI will be needed as a parlay into the evening card from Mohawk.  With the North America Cup fast approaching, some of the 3 yr. old’s will use The Burlington Stakes to see where they measure up.  I’ll take a look at 3 divisions and see if any of my top selections can make it to the winner’s circle!   Best of luck and may the horse be with you!

SATURDAY MATINEE FROM CHURCHILL-

Best Bet-  JEFFERSON CUP STAKES. Race 7 #7 Lost Aptitude, M/L 5-2. WIN WAGER.  Garret Gomez in town for some nice stakes engagements, including this Dale Romans trainee.  Draws the perfect post for the Jefferson Cup Stakes and interestingly enough, Romans has the top 2 in the race.  His other charge Guy’s Reward is a luke warm second choice.  Not hard to take having the top 2 calls in a graded stakes.  Pressure’s on the barn, be interesting to see if they can actually run 1-2.  I’ll stick with Gomez and use a partial part of the bank roll on him.

Next Best-  THE REGRET STAKES, Race 9 #11 Beautician, M/L 5-1. WIN WAGER.  This gal has been in some very high profile races and been in some very difficult spots.  Not the easiest spot here in this graded stakes, but,  i like how’s she’s perfomed on the synthetic and will handle the weeds in this spot.  This grade III. is well within her scope!

Value Bet- THE STEPHEN FOSTER HANDICAP, Race 10 EXA BOX, 4-5-11.  #4 Duke of Mischief, M/L 6-1.  Interesting sort who will offer up a square price in both the win odds and the EXA probables. He’s never hit the board in a Grade I. event, so that task at hand today is daunting. We’ll excuse his performance in the DONN HCP agains the likes of Quality Road,  who won as he pleased that day.  Off that dismal effort had every reason not to show up for his latest, but, he showed up with the running shoes on and was a fast closing second, while posting a decent beyer. The workout pattern at Calder is very encouraging!  Don’t overlook this guy!  #5 Arson Squad, M/L  8-1.  OK pay attention folks! This guy has 1.1 million in the bank and he’s from a $ 3500 stud fee!  Dreams can come true in this business!  Looks for a natural triple here and has already won 3 races at this very distance.  His last race is very telling, a win right here at Churchill Downs with a huge beyer =  one of the top weights in this one. Must be respected and the work out pattern is also positive with a big work 2 back followed by a slow breeze just to keep him tight!  #11 Blame, M/L 3-1.  Hasn’t run a beyer lower than a 100 in almost a year!  Shows up everytime the marbles are on the table and attracts a big money guy in Gomez!  Never been out of the top 3 in any race! and is 4/4 at todays distance!  Hard to ignore and should be the deserved choice in an otherwise wide open affair.  A must on all the gimmick plays!   A couple of horses i chose to bypass in this spot include General Quarters who i feel is up against it in this spot.  I just simply feel he’s a better choice on the synthetic or turf over this spot.  Macho Again won this race last year, but, i get the feeling he is just not the same  horse he was a year ago.

EVENING CARD- MOHAWK

Best Bet- BURLINGTON STAKES, Race 5 #4 Sportswriter, M/L 1-1. WIN WAGER. Would be a nice double  your money proposition and his last race against older conditioned horses was a very credible effort for his 3 yr. old debut race.  He was closing like a freight train in :26 which should serve him well for this.  No reason to think he won’t go forward off of that and then be ready for the NAC!

Next Best- BURLINGTON STAKES, Race 8 #3 Rock Me Please, M/L 8-1.  WIN WAGER. O.K going out on a limb in a race where the wagering will be dominated by 2 foes.  Both Rock N Roll Hanover, and Ideal Matters are expected to take extreme support and deservedly so. Rock N Roll is coming off a huge effort in a championship race at the Big M.  This is strictly a tuneup race for bigger things to come and this might be a spot to look for some value.  Going to the well one more time on a horse conditioned by Robert McIntosh.  He gets them ready and even though he is ambitiously placed, he has a license to up end the apple cart, if he trips out.  I’d consider him on all the gimmicks to get the value!

Value Bet- BURLINGTON STAKES, Race 9 #4 BP Chimo, M/L 7-1. WIN PLACE SHOW.  Should love the long stretch this track gives him. He is a strong closer and been making great strides at Georgian Downs.  His late kick in the Upper Canada stakes was eye catching, but on that 5/8ths post had to settle for the show, when he ran out of real estate.  He was full of the same pace the week before that in the elim which made it a tough choice for Jamieson.  A bad post is the only thing that prevented Jody from giving him a boost of confidence.  I fully expect to see a late kick from this guy tonight and across the board should be a good option for a horse that will have a square price..

BRONCOBUSTER GOES TO THE LUCK OF THE IRISH FOR SATURDAY’S SECOND JEWEL!

Kudos to team Pletcher for the success shown at this year’s Derby, especially overcoming the adversity of having their prized star sidelined and subsequently retired to stud.  When Ekendereya was scratched the week of the Kentucky Derby, some believed Pletcher to be doomed yet another year in his quest for a Derby winner!  Team Pletcher took a leap of faith with another one of their stars in Super Saver. He wasn’t exactly showing the signs that make a Derby contender, let alone a winner!  His prep’s were useful, but, not eye catching!  But, a great trip by the man owns Churchill is all he needed to overcome the odds and the rest his history.

As well as Super Saver raced in the Derby,  along with the classic rail trip he received thanks to Calvin Bo-rail, I am prepared to go value shopping in what i think is a very perplexing Preakness.  It’s not that i don’t think Super Saver can double up because he certainly has as much a shot as anyone and he should definitely be brave and full of himself, after being draped with the roses from 2 weeks ago.  He will be on all my gimmick plays and boxes that’s for sure!  But, I’m not the only one feeling that he wasn’t, nor has ever been on the radar screen, when it comes to Triple Crown thoughts!  Sure he is 1/3 of the way there, but, there’s 2 more legs to prove before his name is added to the likes of Affirmed, Seattle Slew, or Secretariat! Even if Super Saver were EVER to pull of a feat that no other horse has been able to do since 1978, I just don’t see him ever being lifted to the kind of greatness of his predecessors.  With that in mind, I can’t help but, look for a possible upset in today’s second leg, while Ice Box sits on the sidelines awaiting his turn for revenge in the Belmont which will go in another 3 weeks.  To see what upset i like today, check with my Next best bet and value play of the day!

Best Bet- Race 1 #5 Wink at the Girls, M/L 3-1. Ships in from Philadelphia in very sharp form and stretches out to a distance that he has shown to thrive at.  He is 3/5 in the money at today’s distance and going around 2 turns will bode well for him, after 2 useful sprints at Philly. Don’t expect a lot of value on this guy however, as he has gone off as the favorite in 6 of his last 8 starts.

Next Best- Race 12 #12 Dublin, M/L 10-1.  When it comes to the triple crown series this year, this guy has been on my radar screen since his eye catching stretch run in the Southwest at Oaklawn.  I’ve been waiting for things to happen with this guy since and he has come up short on a couple of occasions and when he drew post 17 in the Kentucky Derby, I had to put him on the back burner.  He comes back to the forefront now and i can’t help but notice the HUGE jockey switch from Thompson to Garrett Gomez!  It is a very intriguing change, given that i expected to see Gomez either aboard Lookin At Lucky or Aikenite.  The pilot switch is enough for me to consider this guy a contender today and automatically has to be considered being used on ALL gimmick plays!  If this horse can revert to the type of form he showed in the SouthWest and if Gomez’s presence rejuvenates him enough, he could upset the apple cart at a value price!  Don’t overlook him…..

Value Bet-  Race 12 EXA BOX 1-8-12.  #1 Aikenite, M/L 20-1.  Is there yet another ace up Todd Pletcher’s sleeve? Some people discarded Pletcher’s chances of ANY triple crown winner when Eskendereya was scratched from the Derby and subsequently retired!  Low and behold he showed up with another ACE in Super Saver!  That one goes for the double today, but, beware for his other rail breaker in Aikenite! His run in Derby Trial was eye catching enough and a repeat of that closing ability puts him in the frame, especially if there is any kind of heated dual up front!  A capable Castellano takes over with the defection of Gomez to Dublin.  #8 Super Saver, M/L 5-2.  Got the trip of his life in the Kentucky Derby and it didn’t hurt having a pilot that owns Churchill Downs on his back!  This isn’t Churchill, but, you have to expect this guy to be full of himself and brave after winning the biggest race of his life.  While there’s 11 others thinking upset, this guy will try to double up and get one step closer to immortality and greatness!  A must use on the exotics, until he gives you a reason otherwise!  #12 Dublin, M/L 10-1.  The upset pick and special. see above at the next best bet!   Could be anyone of these 3 and the value spread about should mean a square price on the EXA’s and all gimmick plays!

Whew, it was a wild ride at Churchill Downs yesterday, culminating in an amazing Derby. It was great that the rain took a brief respite and the sun actually came out of hiding for the big race. Congrats to my colleague Bronco for hitting the exacta in his value bet. I cashed in on that one and hope you all did, too. My value bet, Ice Box, overcame all kinds of obstacles and managed to pass 18 horses in the stretch to finish second. Wow. Winning would have been better, but I’ll take the $11.20 for the place.

I’ve had just about enough of the wet stuff and it looks like it will be clearing in Chi-town tomorrow, so let’s head to Arlington and cash in on these plays…

Your BEST BET is 6 LUCKY GAL in RACE 5 (3/1). How could Lady Luck not back Lucky Gal? But seriously, this mare has been cashing some checks on the grass and should like the synthetic. This is her 2nd race from a long layoff, plus she has a sharp work tab. Fits right with these and I like her stalking style.

Your NEXT BEST BET is 2 SUPAH SOUP in RACE 8 (6/1 ML). I’m a fan of Helicopter, but I think this guy can catch him. Hasn’t been so successful in a string of turf tries against tougher. Takes a big drop and switches to the synthetic. Won twice here with Alvarado last year and those Beyers put him in this hunt.

Your VALUE BET is WIN/PLACE on 5 RACIN MASON in RACE 3 (12/1 ML). Gelding finished 3rd on the synthetic in his debut, but has been running on the Hawthorne dirt ever since. I think he may be more successful on the poly. Takes a drop and lands in a pretty soft field. Thornton wins at a 35% clip for this barn here.

Good Luck!

Racing2day.com Preview for Monday April 26th.

Race 9 at Philadelphia Park is a six and a half furlong allowance. Seven are entered headed by Ocean Cracker who will break from the rail under Jeremy Rose. The Anthony Dutrow trained gelding has win four races including one here but his late running style often does not find him in the winners circle and he has eight seconds and seven thirds on his resume. Stellwagen has not raced since January but has been working well and has tactical speed and may be the more logical choice here. Others to consider here include the Bruce Levine trained Buddy’s Song who should also be near the front throughout here.

Mountaineer’s featured 9th race is a five and a half furlong allowance. The morning line favorite is Northern Vow who will be saddled by high percentage trainer Joe Woodard but will be making his first start here. Claimed two starts back, Northern Vow will break from the two hole and will be closing late. The one to catch here may be Hopeforthebest who wired a field of claimers in his last start at Aqueduct and will be seeking his sixth career victory here. Others to consider include No Compete who has only made four previous starts and was most recently fourth in a restricted allowance at Gulfstream Park.

Bonjour! Thursday at Gulfstream…

Best Bet: Gulfstream Race 3 WIN #5 Golden Mystery (2/1 ML). This allowance optional claimer will be run at six and a half furlongs and features a field of six fillies and mares scheduled to head to post. Golden Mystery is a 4YO Florida-bred filly and I think Trujillo will take her to the winner’s circle.

Next Best: Gulfstream Race 1 WIN #6 Nathan Ridge (5/2 ML). This mile-long claimer brings seven horses together, but Nathan’s Ridge looks like the one to watch out for. He could be challenged by #4 Radio Relay (3/1 ML), but I’m looking for Nathan’s Ridge to be first at the wire.

Value Bet: Gulfstream Race 9 WIN #2 Chantilly G. (8/1 ML). The last race on today’s card will be run at a mile on the Turf and brings together a sizeable field of 3YO fillies. Chantilly G. certainly has her work cut out, but could have the necessary credentials to graduate in this maiden claimer. Good luck and let’s try to ca$h in!

Bonne Chance! Monsieur Chanceux

At Pocono Downs tonight, leading driver Georgie Napolitano Jr. will look to improve upon a ridiculous near-40% win percentage, and probably will succeed. He pilots 4 for Camine Fusco, 3 for Ken Rucker and a pair for Lou Pena. You can begin your quest for serious cash tonight by figuring out which four races he won’t win. That’s not always an easy proposition, but the good news is you’ve got Jersey Joe on your side…Let’s do this!

Best Bet
Race 6
#5 Transcending
Rarely throws in a poor performance and I love the start behind the cadillac wheel tonight. Underrated connections will be right there.

Next Best Bet
Race 4
#3 Not Quite Forty
Nearly all of these pacers have demonstrated their lack of ability with consistency this year. So edge to Pellegrini’s pacer, who won’t have to be much to factor here.

Value Bet
Race 10
#3 Mucho Sleazy
The comebacker was useful and can forgive getting winded late. Tighter now and will out-pace long odds in this handicap.

Went to Keeneland’s Opening Day yesterday. Glorious spring day + Good Friday = 24,734 people! Largest spring meet opening day attendance and 2nd largest crowd in Keeneland history! Oh, the humanity. But it’s THE place to see and be seen in the Bluegrass. Today let’s focus our attentions on a couple more Derby preps, the Illinois Derby and the Santa Anita Derby.

Your BEST BET is 1 AMERICAN LION in HAWTHORNE RACE 7, The Illinois Derby (7/2 ML). Yeah, he was a little disappointing in the San Felipe, but I still think he’s better than that. The shades come off again and he tries dirt for the first time, a surface I think he’s going to like based on his running style and pedigree. He also gets a jockey change to go-getter Flores. I think he’ll live up to his potential today.

Your NEXT BEST BET is 2 MONHOCRACY in HAWTHORNE RACE 3 (7/2 ML). Gray won gate to wire in his last at this level, from this post, at this distance, with Diego on board. Lookin for lightning to strike twice.

Your VALUE BET is WIN/PLACE/SHOW on 10 ALPHIE’S BET in SANTA ANITA RACE 6, The Santa Anita Derby (8/1 ML). OK, I am a big fan of Lookin at Lucky, but the gambler in me can’t abide a 4/5 ML, so I gotta find some value in this race. Look no further than Alphie’s Bet. Won the Sham from the 10 post right from the layoff and should be even better in this second start. Only one in the field to win at 9f. Keeps improving with each race and barn is hot, hot, hot. Could score an upset.

Lady Luck
